The Nardò Ring
Daniel Tudor Munteanu, Suceava, Romania.
The Nardò Ring is a striking visual feature from space, and astronauts have photographed it several times. It is a high speed test track built in 1975 by Fiat and currently owned by Porsche. It is located in a remote area on the heel of Italy’s “boot”, in the southern region of Apulia.
The track is a perfect circle, 12.5 kilometers long and 25 meters wide. The diameter of this ring is of approximately 4 km. Its lanes are banked at such a degree that a driver doesn’t need to turn the wheel while riding at the corresponding neutral speed for each lane, driving as if in a straight lane. The circuit thus becomes virtually a rectilinear infinite.
The Ring encompasses a number of agricultural fields. In this zone of intensive agriculture, farmers gain access to their fields through the Ring via a series of underpasses.
